Can A.I. Empower Human Relationships?
"My favorite design book is probably “Mismatch” by Mark van Vugt. Even though it’s not a design book, it outlines all the ways our brain mismatches with the outside world (i.e. fatty food, information overload, loneliness epidemic). It’s very inspirational if we want to re-design services to address people’s fundamental needs in a better way."

Changing the system with behavioural design

‍This full-day experiential workshop will supercharge our ability to affect positive change within complex systems, using an evidence-based behavioural design approach. The methods and tools we will teach and apply in the workshop are relevant to collaborative problem-solving in any domain; whether it’s strategy formulation, new product and service design, re-thinking supply chains, processes and physical spaces or making policy recommendations. Participants will build valuable knowledge, practices and skills that can be applied within their own professional context.

The workshop will explore topics that are familiar and important to most of us, in order to bring the key practices and learning experience to life. We will apply systems thinking and behaviour change to some of Hong Kong’s most critical challenges, such as environmental sustainability, food insecurity and food waste.

Key Practices

Systems Thinking: Discover the power of systems thinking and its role in helping to identify and solve problems within complex networks. Guided by Subject Matter Experts, we'll collectively map a complex system and identify individual nodes of potential change. Our systems mapping practice will surface opportunities to create big impact from small changes by highlighting the personal power of individuals to have a ripple effect of influence.

Behaviour Change: Behaviour change is a scientific, evidence-based discipline that enables us to precisely understand and optimise the impact of interactions in specific contexts. Integrating traditional Human-centred design principles, our behaviour mapping approach identifies opportunities to effect desirable behaviour change with precise, targeted interventions. We’ll draw from case studies and examples from a range of industries to inspire participants to apply this valuable practice within their own profession.

Workshop Activities

  • Warm up activity, a fun energiser to get everyone in the zone
  • Behaviour change masterclass. Learn the foundations of behavioural design and behaviour mapping in an interactive session. Learn how to apply targeted interventions that are most likely to have a positive, scalable impact.
  • Introduce the challenge and how it affects Hong Kong
  • Live system mapping. Facilitators will guide you to create a system map using string and arrows to indicate influences.
  • Small team formation. You will self nominate an area of influence to work in small groups for the rest of the day (approximately 10 - 15 teams). You are encouraged to choose an area of influence you can personally relate to, focussing specifically on playable characters in the system.
  • Subject Matter Expertise. SME’s will be available for teams to provide advice, insight, coaching, suggestions and answer questions about their specialty area of the system
  • Identifying behaviour change opportunities. Groups are given an aspiration based on the area of the system they are in.
  • Behaviour change intervention design. You will generate ideas on interventions you could put into place (e.g. create nudges, restructure the environment, create a new policy, incentivise participants)
  • Prototype interventions. You will consider how to measure the impact of your intervention as well as monitor for unintended consequences.
  • Small team and group shareback. Teams will share their intervention ideas, and Subject Matter Experts provide "Yes, and" ideas to build and improve on the interventions.
  • Reflection and close. You will be invited to consider and share what you can personally take from what you've learnt and apply it in your day-to-day work and life.
Join us in this unique opportunity to leverage your design skills for positive change, make connections with like-minded professionals, and drive transformative solutions in a world hungry for sustainable progress.

This is a full day programme starting at 9am & finishing with drinks at 7pm.
